Mining Hose & Pipe Selection Guide: Layflat, PVC, Rubber or HDPE?

Choosing a mining hose or pipe by diameter alone can create a line that is difficult to prime, too restrictive, unsafe at the connection or expensive to maintain. The right decision starts with the pump position, medium, flow, pressure, route and installation period. This guide compares the main CARCHARTECH fluid-transfer families and explains where each one fits.

Start with the job, not the material

A hose or pipe should be selected around the complete transfer duty. Two lines with the same nominal diameter may need different constructions because one is on the pump inlet, another is on the discharge side, and a third carries sand-water through a fixed route for months.

Before comparing products, define the medium, solids concentration, largest expected particle, required flow, continuous pressure, surge pressure, temperature, route length, elevation difference, installation period and connection standard. These inputs determine whether the priority is vacuum resistance, pressure support, abrasion allowance, portability or long-term route stability.

1. PVC fiber-reinforced hose for flexible water delivery

This is the lightest starting point in the current CARCHARTECH range for general positive-pressure water transfer. A flexible PVC body with polyester-yarn reinforcement makes it practical around pumps, equipment and temporary work areas. The present family covers 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 inch sizes.

Use it for compatible water-delivery duties when the ordered pressure rating, fittings and clamps match the system. Do not place it on a pump inlet simply because it is flexible. The current product is not specified for suction or vacuum duty; a helix-reinforced hose should be considered instead.

2. PVC spiral hose when the line must hold its shape

A rigid PVC spiral helix supports the round cross-section, making this family more suitable than layflat hose for water-pump suction and for discharge routes that need shape stability. The current range covers 1 to 8 inch. The listed 1 to 6 inch models have working pressures from 3 to 6 bar by size; 1 to 5 inch models use 30 m lengths, while 6 and 8 inch project sizes use 8 m sections.

This family is positioned for clean water and general non-aggressive water-based fluids. Oil, fuel, chemicals and unusual temperatures require a separate material review.

3. PVC layflat hose for portable discharge routes

Layflat hose is a strong option when a positive-pressure discharge line must be deployed, recovered and stored efficiently. The empty hose can be flattened and rolled, which helps with temporary mine dewatering, construction drainage, irrigation and emergency transfer routes.

CARCHARTECH's current large-diameter reference includes 6 and 8 inch red PVC layflat hose in 50 m rolls. Recorded burst pressures are 18 bar for the 6 inch model and 15 bar for the 8 inch model. These are burst values, not recommended continuous working pressures. The working pressure must be confirmed with an appropriate safety factor for continuous pressure, surge, temperature, connections and site conditions.

4. Rubber discharge hose for sand-water and muddy water

When the discharge medium contains more solids or the flexible section faces demanding site handling, a natural-rubber-based hose with textile cord reinforcement can be a better starting point. The current positive-pressure discharge range covers 2 to 8 inch, with model-specific working pressures of 75, 150 or 180 psi.

The construction, wall thickness, reinforcement and length vary by model. Do not convert this discharge family into a suction claim. If inlet duty is required, provide the required vacuum condition and ask for a verified suction-rated construction.

5. PE100 HDPE pipe for fixed or long-term lines

A solid-wall HDPE line becomes attractive when the route is stable, the installation is intended to remain in service and the project can support planned fusion or flanged transitions. The current PE100 range includes OD110, OD140, OD180 and OD225 mm PN10/SDR17 pipe in 5.8 m straight lengths.

HDPE does not rust and its smooth bore supports water and engineered sand-water transfer. It is not automatically the answer for every abrasive slurry. Solids concentration, maximum particle size, velocity, route movement and connection design still need engineering review.

A practical selection sequence

    1. Identify suction or discharge position. Vacuum resistance is critical on the inlet; pressure and surge dominate the outlet.

    2. Classify the medium: clear water, muddy water, sand-water mixture or higher-solids slurry.

    3. Confirm flow, pressure, route length and elevation difference. A matching diameter at the pump port is not enough to size the full line.

    4. Choose temporary, movable or fixed installation. This separates layflat hose, flexible reinforced hose and solid-wall pipe options.

    5 .Define connections, supports, handling and storage. A reliable hose with the wrong coupling or clamp is still an unreliable system.

    6. onfirm the exact model and datasheet before ordering. Pressure, length and construction must remain tied to that model.

Build the line as a system

Many projects use more than one material. A flexible hose section can absorb routing needs near a pump, while a PE100 trunk line supports a fixed route and a layflat section serves a temporary discharge point. Couplings, clamps, reducers, flange transitions, splitters and foot valves must be selected with the same care as the hose or pipe.
